COURSE INFO:

Why do I need this course?

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are relatively common and are potentially life-threatening. Most AAAs are ‘clinically’ silent and if left untreated, may eventually result in aortic rupture (often fatal). Early detection of an AAA with a prompt evaluation and  surgical consultation are of paramount importance.

Ultrasound is the imaging of choice for detection of AAAs in subgroups of patients at high risk of developing an AAA.

What questions does this course answer?

How can I detect an AAA with ultrasound? How do I distinguish a fusiform aneurysm from a saccular aneurysm? How can I identify the celiac trunk with ultrasound? How does an aortic dissection appears on ultrasound? These are just some of the questions you will be able to answer at the end of this course.

Aim of the course

This Master course on Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm ultrasound will give you a comprehensive understanding  of the ultrasound diagnostic methods and scanning technique to identify, classify and measure the maximum diameter of an AAA.  In addition the surveillance strategy of AAA will be discussed.

Course key points

  • Anatomy and ultrasound anatomy of the abdominal aorta and branches
  • AAA classification
  • AAA ultrasound appearance
  • AAA maximum diameter measurements with ultrasound
  • Different methods to measure the maximum AAA diameter
  • AAA scanning protocol
  • Tips to assess a tortuous AAA
  • Ultrasound surveillance strategies review
  • Ultrasound appearance of aortic dissections, mural thrombus and aortic wall abnormalities
