Peripheral arterial disease is a common manifestation of systemic atherosclerosis and a major cause of functional impairment worldwide. Cardiovascular risk factors such as ageing, smoking, diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, dyslipidaemia, and genetic predisposition promote the development of atherosclerotic lesions within the lower limb arterial system.

Aim of this course
This accredited ultrasound course is designed to help healthcare professionals and practitioners in performing a Doppler ultrasound assessment of the lower-limb arterial system. Why this course?
Ultrasound imaging is the first-line diagnostic tool for assessing the lower limb arterial system to diagnose and grade peripheral arterial disease, such as arterial stenosis, occlusion, and aneurysmal dilatation in patients with cardiovascular risk factors or lower limb symptoms.
Lower limb arterial ultrasound imaging, also known as lower limb Duplex or Doppler ultrasound, provides real-time information on blood flow status and arterial wall abnormalities.
B-mode permits to obtain information on vessel anatomy, arterial wall morphology and dilatation of the main lower limb arteries (common femoral, superficial femoral, popliteal, and tibial arteries); while Doppler – colour flow and pulsed-wave Doppler allows the study of blood flow characteristics; measures blood flow velocities, helping to detect turbulent flow and increased velocities due to arterial stenosis or to identify absence of blood flow in an occluded artery.
Several ultrasound criteria, including blood flow velocities, velocity ratios, and morphological characteristics of arterial lesions, are used to assess the severity of peripheral arterial disease.
Combining clinical symptoms (patient history and physical exam) with the ultrasound findings provides a comprehensive picture needed to accurately diagnose the presence of arterial disease and determine whether medical management or invasive procedures are appropriate.
